Standards Summary

Standards & Standards Development Activities

International standards have the potential to remove trade barriers, harmonize research and development activities, and contribute to development of regulations by national and international bodies. As government, academic and industrial research and development organizations endeavor to understand and develop cellulose nanomaterial-based products for multiple industrial sectors, the need for international standards for cellulose nanomaterials is evident and growing. The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Group and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) are taking the lead in standards development efforts. ISO standard development activities are carried out within two technical committees: TC 6 - Paper, board and pulps (whose scope includes cellulose nanomaterials), and TC 229 - Nanotechnologies.

Standards development has progressed in the following areas: Terminology, Measurement and Characterization, EHS, and Material Specification.

Interlaboratory Comparison

An interlaboratory comparison has been organized to validate the performance of protocols for measuring the crystallinity of cellulose nanomaterials (CNM) using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) with Rietveld modelling. The comparison is organized through the International standardisation network, VAMAS.  The results will provide the pre-normative data for an ISO Technical Specification (TS 23361) which has recently been approved as a new work item at ISO TC/229.  Additional participants are welcome.

2011 Roadmap for the Development of International Standards For Nanocellulose:

This Roadmap is a result of a 2011 International Standards Workshop held on June 9, 2011 in Washington, D.C. The Roadmap was written by a team of global experts following in-depth break-out sessions conducted at the workshop.
